How to Voice Type in Microsoft Teams on Windows

· HyperVoice Team

The short answer: Teams has no Dictate button in its message box, so you dictate into it the same way you would into any Windows app. Click into the message box, start voice typing, say the message, stop, read it, press Enter. Windows has a free built-in option, Win+H. HyperVoice is a free app that does it with one hotkey, transcribes on your own PC, and can press Enter for you when you say “send it”.

Why there’s no Dictate button in Teams

Microsoft 365 has a Dictate button in some Office apps. Microsoft’s own Dictate in Microsoft 365 page lists Word, Outlook and PowerPoint in its “Applies to” list, and Teams isn’t one of them (checked 23 October 2026). If your copy of Teams does show a microphone for dictation in the message box, use it. Otherwise, use one of the two options below. Both work in the Teams app and in Teams in the browser.

Option 1: Windows’ built-in voice typing (Win+H)

Windows 10 and 11 come with voice typing:

  1. Click into the Teams message box.
  2. Press Win+H. The voice typing bar opens and starts listening.
  3. Say your message. The words appear in the box as you talk.
  4. Press Win+H again (or click the microphone) to stop. Read it, then press Enter to send.

It costs nothing and there’s nothing to install, so try it first. Two things to know:

Option 2: A dictation hotkey (HyperVoice)

HyperVoice is a dictation hotkey for Windows: press it in any app, talk, and the text lands where your cursor is. In Teams:

  1. Install it from the Microsoft Store. It’s signed by Microsoft, so there’s no install warning. Setup ends with a test dictation.
  2. Click into the message box of a chat, a channel post or a thread reply.
  3. Press Ctrl+Shift+Space and say the message. You can change the hotkey in Settings.
  4. Press Ctrl+Shift+Space again. The message is typed into the box, not sent, so you read it first and press Enter yourself.

Speech-to-text runs on your PC (Whisper or NVIDIA Parakeet models), so your audio isn’t sent anywhere to be transcribed. Punctuation comes from how you speak; you don’t say “comma”. It’s free at 500 words a day with a free account, no card.

Send it without touching the keyboard

In Teams, Enter sends the message. HyperVoice can press it for you. Turn it on in Settings → Dictation → Voice commands, then end a dictation with the words “send it”. HyperVoice types the message and presses Enter, so it goes. Only the very end of a dictation counts, so saying “send it” in the middle of a sentence doesn’t trigger it. Leave it off if you’d rather always read a message before it goes.

Make spoken messages read like typed ones

People talk in longer, looser sentences than they type in chat. If your dictated messages come out wordy, HyperVoice’s optional Chat Message clean-up style rewrites what you said as a short, casual but professional message and removes the filler words. The clean-up styles are off by default. When you turn one on, the text (never the audio) is sent to an AI provider. More on this in Faster Slack and Teams messages with voice.

If the text doesn’t land where you expect

Which one to use

If you dictate a Teams message now and then and you’re always online, Win+H is free and already on your PC. If you write messages all day, want punctuation without saying it, want “send it” to send for you, or would rather the audio stayed on your PC, HyperVoice is built for that. The same hotkey works in Excel, Outlook and Gmail, Claude Code and everywhere else you type. Try it free from the Microsoft Store.

Frequently asked questions

Does Microsoft Teams have a Dictate button?

Not in the way Word, Outlook and PowerPoint do. Microsoft's Dictate in Microsoft 365 support page lists Word, Outlook and PowerPoint in its Applies To list, and Teams is not one of them (checked October 2026). You can still dictate Teams messages with Windows' own voice typing (Win+H) or with a dictation app such as HyperVoice.

How do I voice type a message in Teams?

Click into the Teams message box, press Win+H to open Windows voice typing, speak, then press Win+H again to stop. With HyperVoice, click into the message box, press Ctrl+Shift+Space, say the message, and press Ctrl+Shift+Space again: the message is typed into the box, ready for you to read and send.

Will dictating send the message before I've checked it?

No. Both Win+H and HyperVoice put the words into the message box and stop there, so you read the message and press Enter yourself. HyperVoice only presses Enter for you if you turn on the 'send it' voice command and end a dictation with the words 'send it'.

Can I send a Teams message hands-free?

Yes, with HyperVoice. Turn on the 'send it' voice command in Settings, Dictation, Voice commands, then end the dictation with the words 'send it'. HyperVoice types the message and presses Enter, which sends it in Teams. Only the very end of a dictation counts.

Does it work in Teams in the browser?

Yes. Both Win+H and HyperVoice type wherever your cursor is, so they work in the Teams app and in Teams in a browser tab, in chats, channels and thread replies.

Does Win+H work offline?

No. Microsoft says Windows voice typing uses online speech recognition powered by Azure Speech services, so it needs an internet connection. HyperVoice transcribes on your own PC with Whisper or NVIDIA Parakeet speech models.
